How to choose a great business name

  • Easy to say and spell. If you have to spell it out on the phone, it’ll be hard to find online.
  • Hints at what you do — or how you want customers to feel.
  • Leaves room to grow. “Bondi Bathroom Tiling” is clear, but limiting if you expand.
  • Available everywhere — business names register, trade marks, .com.au domain and social handles.
  • Looks good as a logo. Try it in our free logo maker.

Check your name is available

Before you print business cards, make sure nobody else already owns the name:

  1. Trade marks: search the WIPO Global Brand Database, which covers many countries at once.
  2. Business registers: search where you’ll trade — for example the ASIC register in Australia (plus IP Australia’s TM Checker), Companies House in the UK, or your state’s business registry in the US.
  3. Domain and socials: check the .com (or your local domain) and the handles you’ll want.

Then register it the official way where you operate. In Australia, for example, you register a business name with ASIC after getting an ABN — business.gov.au explains the steps.

Next step: once you’ve got your ABN and name, here’s how to send your first invoice — and a free invoice template to do it with.

Frequently asked questions

How do I come up with a business name?

Start with a word that describes what you do or how you want customers to feel, then try combining it with modern endings, places or simple descriptive words. Say your shortlist out loud, check it's easy to spell, and make sure it isn't already taken.

How do I check if a business name is available?

Search your country's business name or company register, then check trade marks — WIPO's Global Brand Database covers many countries at once. It's also worth checking the matching domain name and social media handles.

Do I need to register my business name?

In many countries you do if you trade under a name that isn't your own. For example, in Australia you register business names with ASIC; in the UK, companies register with Companies House. Check the rules where you operate.

Is this business name generator free?

Yes. Generate as many ideas as you like, save a shortlist and turn any name into a logo — no sign-up needed.

Are the generated names free to use?

The ideas are free, but a suggestion isn't a guarantee the name is available or can be registered. Always check business registers and trade marks before you commit.

Name ideas are generated automatically and aren’t checked for availability. Always check business registers and trade marks before using a name. General information only.
